Document that is based on work undertaken between October 2010 and March 2011 and is presented in two parts. The first section highlights the need for greater consideration to be given to meeting the needs of Black and minority ethnic children and young people in all aspects of children’s services provision. Some of the key themes, policies and programmes are summarised and questions raised about their application to engage with and effectively address the needs of Black and minority ethnic children, young people and their families.

Report that focuses on the experiences of older grandparents (those aged over 65) who are raising their grandchildren.

Th study aims to provide insight into the circumstances of older kinship carers, and the challenges they experience, in order to bring forward recommendations for improving the support provided to them and the children they are raising.

Getting better?: improving outcomes for children and young people (Part 2)

Briefing paper produced to highlight the key research messages from the Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Children and Young People’s services (C4EO) for general practitioners (GPs) and other commissioners and providers of health services, across a number of thematic areas. The messages help to illustrate some of the interventions that have been proven to have a positive impact and make a difference in people’s lives.

Buttle UK

Website named after Frank Buttle - a remarkable man, whose hard work and personal sacrifice helped to establish grant giving programmes, which have been making a real difference to the lives of children and young people in need since 1953.

Every year, Buttle UK provides thousands of grants to some of the most vulnerable children in the UK, often when there is no other source of help available to them.

Final report of the social pedagogy pilot programme: development and implementation

Research commissioned by government to develop and implement a pilot programme in order to determine the impact of, and best method for, introducing a social pedagogic approach in residential children’s homes in line with the Care Matters White Paper’s commitment (DCSF 2007).

Resettlement provision for children and young people: accommodation and education, training and employment

Thematic review, commissioned by the Youth Justice Board, which examines accommodation and education, training and employment (ETE) resettlement provision for sentenced young men aged 15 to 18 in young offender institutions.

It reports on the work carried out in custody to prepare young people for release, using survey data as well as indepth interviews with 61 sentenced young men, their case supervisors and follow-up information on what happened to them on release.

Care and permanence planning for looked after children in Scotland

Research that explores the pathways and decision-making processes through the care and court systems in Scotland for 100 looked after children from the point they were first identified as at risk, to the point of adoption or permanence.

Information was obtained from records held by Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA) teams and Sheriff Courts across Scotland. All cases had been dealt with under the Adoption (Scotland) Act 1978.
