Forgotten Citizens: Today's Forgotten Citizens

This podcast was recorded at the 'Forgotton Citizens' Conference, held in Glasgow on the 17th June 2008. Furrah Arshad introduces the work of the organisation Ethnic Enable and its origins. She talks through some of the major issues affecting people with learning disabilities from black and minority ethnic communities in Scotland and also shares her thoughts on how best to make connections with families from black and minority ethnic communities. Tahira Ramzan is a young Asian woman with learning disabilities and she shares her experiences and hopes for her future.

Abolition of Poindings and Warrant Sales Act 2001 (repealed)

This Act of Scottish Parliament abolishes the process by which payment of a debt can be enforced by poinding or warrant sale. The Act ensures that any enactment or rule of law allowing such enforcement shall cease to have effect. Poinding (pronounced ‘pinding’) is a form of diligence enabling the attachment of a debtor’s moveable property by the creditor. A Warrant Sale is a form of diligence by which a debtor’s moveable property is sold to repay the debt. The warrant sale can only commence after poinding procedure has been carried out by an officer of court.

Life as a teenager (Radio 4 series: The seven ages of humanity)

Four Radio 4 programmes in a series about the health and wellbeing of the seven ages of humanity, presented by Connie St Louis. These four programmes explore the teenage years. The first programme looks at the hormonal changes that are the hallmark of the teenage years, the second looks at teenage behaviour and the third at how adolescents relate to those around them. The final programme of the series looks at the later stages of adolescence.

Britain's poorest children : severe and persistent poverty and social exclusion

The current Labour government has made a commitment to abolish child poverty in Britain by 2020. In its efforts to do so, a number of targets have been established and indicators of progress are being reviewed annually. However, tackling severe child poverty does not feature in these targets or indicators. In fact, although there is now a wealth of information about child poverty in Britain, very little is known about either the extent of severe child poverty or the children who are affected.
