Community consultation on poverty and ethnicity in Scotland

This study explores participants' experiences of poverty, their coping strategies and views on potential solutions. It involved interviews with 32 participants from four ethnic backgrounds (white Scottish, East European, Gypsy/Travellers and Chinese) in two Scottish regions: Fife and Highland. Stakeholders from the public and voluntary sectors were also consulted. Report published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in April 2011.

Loneliness compendium: examples from research and practice

Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT)'s action research programme 'Neighbourhood Approaches to Loneliness' looks at how a neighbourhood as a whole can support those who live with loneliness. This paper defines loneliness; explores how lonely people can be identified and engaged and outlines research and projects that could inform the Approaches to Loneliness programme.

Ethnic diversity and inequality: ethical and scientific rigour in social research

This research addresses the increasing need for research to inform policy and practice development that is sensitive to the diversity of the UK's multiethnic population. Emphasis was given to the importance of ensuring that any guidance developed and promoted should be regularly appraised in light of the evolving social world and ethical and scientific standards. Poverty and ethnicity in Scotland: review of the literature and datasets

This study reviews literature and datasets to establish the main patterns, themes and issues from research on ethnicity and poverty in Scotland and to identify key sources of statistical information. This review considers vulnerability to, and experiences of, poverty in terms of income and employment, housing, education and health. Published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in April 2011

Teenage drinking cultures

This report investigates the onset and development of drinking behaviours within teenage friendship groups.

Using social network data from the Belfast Youth Development Study, the study identified and sampled eight relatively stable friendship groups covering a mix of social class, gender and type of education. Health and social care bill: bill 132 of 2010-11: research paper 11/11

This briefing on the Health and Social Care Bill has been prepared for the Second Reading debate on the Bill in the House of Commons on 31 January 2011. The Bill is intended to give effect to the reforms requiring primary legislation that were proposed in the NHS White Paper Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS. This White Paper set out the Government’s aims to reduce central control of the NHS, to engage doctors in the commissioning of health services, and to give patients greater choice. Support.Stay.Save: care and support of people with dementia in their own homes

This report from the Alzheimer’s Society reveals that many people with dementia and carers receive insufficient support and care at home. It also found that the home care workers who responded regularly worked with people with dementia and understood that they could have a good quality of life. First published in January 2011.
