The Committee has asked for our views on access to housing in local areas, on homelessness legislation and on housing supply generally. Since each of these is a big issue in its own right, in the evidence below, Shelter has looked mainly at progress towards the 2012 homelessness target and at some of the implications of that target.

Fostering services: national minimum standards - fostering services regulations

These regulations and standards form the basis of the new regulatory framework under the Care Standards Act 2000 for the conduct of fostering services. Includes a statement on the relationship with the UK National Standards for Foster Care produced in 1999.

Introduction to law (English)

This learning object is suitable especially for an opening module, as it provides an orientation into the subject and will stimulate debate on tricky legal and ethical issues. Introduction to Law sets out to make users aware of: the importance and relevance of law; how interesting law can be; the many ways that law impacts upon our lives and work; the importance of Law to social work practice; and the connections between Law and social work values. Courtroom scenario

'Courtroom scenario' is suitable for a module or learning opportunity on working in courts. These materials will enable users to: perform confidently in relation to court processes and systems; appreciate good practice when giving evidence; develop understanding of, and skills in responding to cross-examination; and identify involvement in the court room as a positive element of practice.

Commissioner for Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2003

This Act was developed in response to investigations carried out by a Scottish Parliament committee which concluded that a new and independent office of 'Commissioner for Children and Young People' (the Commissioner) should be established. There are a number of principles which underpin the Act. These are that the Commissioner is independent; the best interests of children and young people should be a primary consideration in all matters affecting them; and the views of children and young people should be taken into account in accordance with age and maturity.

Becoming a carer : a booklet about looking after someone with dementia

This booklet, produced by the Mental Health Foundation, is for anyone who has become, or thinks they may become a carer for someone with dementia. This booklet explains some of the basic facts about dementia, gives ideas on where to get practical and emotional support, offers advice on how to plan for the future, and provides some tips on caring for people with dementia. Importantly, it also suggests some ways carers can look after themselves while they are caring. And finally, it recommends sources of further information and help.
