Police Research Series, Paper 94 - Child Abuse: Training Investigating Officers

An increasing media and public attention surrounding cases of child abuse start to take place. Amongst the areas of concern is the way in which such victims are dealt with by the criminal justice system. Efforts to address this issue have led to developments such as the joint investigation of child abuse by police officers and social workers, as well as the videotaping of investigative interviews with children.

Drug and alcohol services in Scotland

Drug and alcohol misuse are major problems in Scotland but resources to address them are not always used effectively. In this study, published information on services was analysed and national documents were reviewed, expenditure data from all NHS boards and councils were collected and analysed and activity data from all police forces in Scotland were collected to give an indication of expenditure.

Ending child poverty: 'Thinking 2020'

In June 2008, the Child Poverty Unit held an event entitled ’Ending Child Poverty: “Thinking 2020”’ at which around 100 stakeholders from across lobby organisations, academic institutions, devolved administrations and local and central Government attended. The event was designed to begin a discussion with stakeholders on the vision for a UK free of child poverty by 2020, and the route by which that could be achieved.

'The same as you?' review of services for people with learning disabilities was published in 2000 and set out a 10-year programme of change that would support children and adults with learning disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders (including Asperger’s Syndrome) to lead full lives, giving them choice about where they live and what they do.

This report was produced by the Day Services Group, a subgroup of the National Implementation Group, which was set up to look at how day services in Scotland are putting the recommendations of The same as you? (SAY) into practice.

Still A Bairn? Throughcare & Aftercare Services In Scotland : Final Report To The Scottish Executive

The University of York was commissioned by the Scottish Executive to undertake a two-year study of the way local authorities are discharging their duties and powers under the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 to promote throughcare and aftercare for looked after young people. This final report is based on the findings of data from the national postal survey of thirty-one Scottish local authorities and other agencies involved in the provision of throughcare and aftercare.

Report on the consultation on the draft Adult Protection Committee guidance

The Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 (the Act) was passed by the Scottish Parliament in Spring 2007. Part 1 of the Act, which is scheduled to commence on 29 October 2008, introduces new measures to identify and protect adults at risk of harm. These measures include a legislative framework for the creation of local multi-agency Adult Protection Committees (APCs) across Scotland. The Act requires APCs and councils to have regard to any guidance issued by the Scottish Ministers about their functions under the Act.

Report of a study which aimed to determine what impact the dependence on self-report of smoking status during pregnancy has on both access to smoking cessation services and the accuracy of smoking prevalence figures in the pregnant population of Scotland.

Work, saving and retirement among ethnic minorities: A qualitative study

This research study was designed to examine the different factors that affect the work, savings and retirement decisions of ethnic minority groups. The aim of this qualitative research was to fill acknowledged gaps in existing research to ensure that policies are appropriate and sensitive to any cultural differences. The findings are based on depth interviews conducted with people from the six main ethnic minority groups in the UK (Indian, Pakistani, Black Caribbean, Black African, Bangladeshi and Chinese), including those below and above State Pension age.

"It's everyone's job to make sure I'm alright" Report of the Child Protection Audit and Review. This report presents the findings of the Child Protection review. The central part of the review was an audit of the practice of police, medical, nursing, social work, Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration, and education staff. The audit was based on a sample of 188 cases which covered the range of possible concerns about children from early identification of vulnerability to substantiated abuse or neglect.
