SCIE Position paper 3: Has service user participation made a difference to social care services?

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) wants to bring together a lot of knowledge about social care, so that information on what works best is available to everyone. This Position paper is about how social care services can be made better by the people who use them - that is, the service users themselves. It brings together the main findings from six reviews that looked at whether service user participation made a difference to changing and improving social care services.

Whole systems working: a guide and discussion paper

This resource was produced by the Integrated Care Network (ICN) which provides information and support to frontline NHS and Local Government organisations seeking to improve the quality of provision to users, patients and carers by integrating the planning and delivery of services.

Key to the role of the ICN is the facilitation of communication between frontline organisations and central government, so that policy and practice inform each other effectively. The ICN is part of the Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP).

Core tasks for Designated Managers in educational and residential establishments in Scotland

The role of the designated manager for looked after children and young people in schools was established following the publication of the Learning With Care report in 2001. Having a designated manager in educational establishments and developing a reciprocal role in residential child care establishments is central to improving educational outcomes. This Scottish Government guidance is aimed at assisting designated managers in discharging their responsibilities to looked after children, young people and care leavers.

Changing Lives: Report of the 21st Century Social Work Review

Report of the recommendations made by the 21st Century Social Work Review Group for the future of social services in Scotland. Published by the Scottish Government in February 2006, it set out a new direction for social work services in Scotland based on the strong core values of inclusiveness and meeting the whole needs of individuals and families. It seeks to equip social work services to rise to the challenge of supporting and protecting our most vulnerable people and communities in the early part of the 21st century.

Leading practice : a development programme for first-line managers (Facilitator's handbook)

Development programme created for first-line managers in social care. Divided into eleven sessions and consisting of activities, discussion points and reading suggestions, it is intended to assist the development of the individual and organisation through gaining a better knowledge and understanding of practice-focused management.
