The 2008 drug strategy: one year on

The government published the new drug strategy in February 2008. Since then there has been a great deal of progress, with drug use now down to its lowest level in more than a decade. However, there is still more to be done and the government is determined that the action it takes should meet the priorities and needs of local communities.

Progress is discussed under the following headings: enforcing the law and protecting communities; preventing harm to young people and families; improving drug treatment and helping people reintegrate into society; communications and community engagement. The report includes a number of case studies that demonstrate: community engagement; individuals' successful drug treatment programmes; family intervention projects.
