Elearning : managing risk, minimising restraint : challenges, dilemmas and positive approaches : for working with older people in care homes

This learning activity is a Social Care Institute for Excellence SCIE e-learning resource. These elearning resources are freely available to all. They provide audio, video and interactive technology to assist in exploring the nature of managing risk and minimising restraint when working with older people in care homes. The resources also support learning and teaching for the Health and Social Care Diploma, levels 3 and 4. Resource published in 2009.

Evaluation of the extra care housing initiative: PSSRU technical report

Report on an evaluation of new build schemes for older people that received capital funding from the Extra Care Housing Fund in the first two rounds, from 2004–2006.

The evaluation aimed to examine the development of the schemes from their implementation, and to follow the residents’ experiences and health over time. A particular feature of the evaluation was to compare explicitly costs and outcomes with those for residents moving into care homes.

SCIE knowledge review 13 : outcomes-focused services for older people

This knowledge review includes a review of research evidence on the outcomes valued by older people and a practice survey that aims to identify the factors that facilitate and inhibit achieving desired outcomes. It also contains a postal survey of localities and social services managers in England and Wales known to be interested in developing outcomes-focused approaches to older people's services; and in-depth studies in six localities. Knowledge review published by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) in January 2007.

The costs and benefits of preventative support services for older people

Paper that reviews the evidence on the cost effectiveness of preventative support services that assist older people with care and support needs to remain in their own homes.

The costs of these preventative support services are contrasted with the costs of specialist housing options, such as sheltered and extra care housing and also with the costs of health services, as part of reviewing the value for money of preventative support services (henceforth PSS).
