SCIE guide 34: practice development: collaborative working in social care

This guide can be used in statutory and independent sectors by social care workers, social workers and their managers to improve the use of knowledge, both research and practice-based, in service development. The guide is one of a series published by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE). SCIE guides are one-stop shops for social care practitioners, presenting key findings, current legislation and examples of what is working well to guide and inform practice. A model of practice and collaboration

This resource recognises that social work/social care are made more complex by the multiple relationships with people and agencies with whom you must collaborate to get your work done. The experiences of a family, the Brooks and the professionals and agencies who work with them, illustrate a ‘model’ designed to help you in planning and reflecting on these multiple collaborations.

Valentine Scarlett, teaching fellow at University of Dundee explores innovative ways to support social work students meet Key Capabilities in Child Care and Protection. She describes her work with a range of pre qualifying students across disciplines to enhance their learning in child care and protection. By encouraging students to work collaboratively in this arena, she explains how joint approaches can be explored, assumptions questioned and potential future working relationships identified.

Linking up : emotional support for young people with learning disabilities

This resource is a guide for Connexions workers and staff working with young people in transition. Connexions is the government's support service for all young people aged 13 to 19 in England. It brings together all the services and support young people need during their teenage years offering differentiated and integrated support to young people through Personal Advisers (PAs).

Mapping the terrain : 16-19 funding transfer (LGA research report)

In April 2010 the Learning and Skills Council in England will be abolished and responsibility for planning and commissioning education and training for 16–18 year olds will move to local authorities. This report looks at local authorities’ early experiences of the transfer to help inform planning, especially with regard to work- force capacity.

Child Protection Inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Kennedy McFarlane

Following the tragic death of three year old Kennedy McFarlane on the 17th of May 2000, Dumfries and Galloway Child Protection Committee (CPC) commissioned an immediate inquiry into the circumstances which led up to her fatal injury. The object of this inquiry is not to apportion blame but to learn lessons which will help to protect children from abuse and neglect in the future. Also known as The Hammond Report.
