The challenges of developing and managing mixed tenure housing

Short piece of research into the practical challenges of developing and then managing mixed tenure developments in Scotland. A survey was sent out to local authorities and housing associations across Scotland in an attempt to gather information on some of the barriers or challenges associated with mixed tenure developments and how organisations have sought to overcome these. A developer perspective was also sought.

The long-term record of UK housebuilders’ levels of output tells a story of consistent underdelivery. Largely unresponsive to increasing demand, the supply of new homes has been found inadequate a long time before the recent financial crisis, but the crash has made the situation even worse.

Building pressure : access to housing in Scotland in 2009

Report drawing attention to some of the symptoms of the shortage of affordable housing in Scotland. These include lengthening waiting lists, increased use of temporary accommodation, increased competition for decreasing numbers of lets and rising numbers of evictions. To counter these trends the report urges the Scottish Government to continue investing in affordable housing.

Housing policies for Scotland: challenges and changes

Major changes in tenure over the last 25 years mean that two out of three people in Scotland are home-owners and half of social housing is provided by independent non-profit organisations. Despite these changes, longstanding challenges still remain to be met, and new challenges are emerging. This study looks back over the past decade of Scottish housing policy and forward to the next, as well as, provides an overview of housing outcomes in Scotland and how housing policy contributes to these.
