Men in families and family policy in a changing world

Publication which has been financed by the United Nations Trust Fund on Family Activities, and provides funding support for research activities with an overall aim of promoting the objectives of the International Year of the Family. The five independent chapters were commissioned to focus on a number of relevant current international issues affecting families and the role of men in addressing them.

A national study of ageing and HIV (50 plus)

This report contains the views and concerns of people with HIV aged 50 and over, living into an old age that many of them never expected to see. The social care needs of this rapidly growing group have not previously been addressed in the UK. The 50 Plus research project asked 410 of them – 1 in 25 of all those currently being seen for care – for their views on their current and future lives. The report also analysed the resulting data to compare three of the largest subgroups: gay/bisexual men, black African women and white heterosexuals.

Becoming a carer : a booklet about looking after someone with dementia

This booklet, produced by the Mental Health Foundation, is for anyone who has become, or thinks they may become a carer for someone with dementia. This booklet explains some of the basic facts about dementia, gives ideas on where to get practical and emotional support, offers advice on how to plan for the future, and provides some tips on caring for people with dementia. Importantly, it also suggests some ways carers can look after themselves while they are caring. And finally, it recommends sources of further information and help.

Being Positive

Being Positive, a two-part investigative Open University/BBC series, examines the nature of the AIDS virus, how it works and the history of the development of HIV drug treatments. Part one, Dead Unlucky and part two, Dead Lucky, follow the stories of people who have been infected. This resource is part of the Open2.net website which is the online learning portal from the Open University and the BBC.

Still going strong : a guide to living with dementia

This booklet, produced by the Mental Health Foundation, is for people who want to find out more about living with dementia. It explains some of the basic facts about dementia, gives ideas on where to get practical and emotional help, offers advice on planning for the future, and details some strategies which other people have used to cope with dementia. Finally, it recommends places to go for information and help for people with dementia.
