HIV-related stigma & discrimination : prisoners

This factsheet highlights the low social status of prisoners and how this can mean they are marginalised and excluded from the mainstream of society. They experience stigma and discrimination behind bars and are often regarded as 'unworthy' in the general community. Prisoners face discrimination because of their status as 'prisoners' (i.e. criminal record and incarceration), because of what being in prison is associated with (drug use, same-sex activities and violence), and what it might lead to (HIV infection).

Good practice guidance for working with children and families affected by substance misuse

This document was published by the Scottish Executive in 2003.

The first part of this guidance sets out what is currently known about the extent of parental substance misuse and the impact on children.

Part 2 sets out what agencies need to ask of families when they present with drug or alcohol problems, and provides guidance to staff on identifying risks.

Part 3 offers advice on what kinds of help may be needed, and on how to work together more effectively.

Media guide to terminology

The media plays a valuable role in informing the public about HIV and AIDS. However, some terms which can be misleading about HIV/AIDS, or degrading to HIV-positive people, are not helpful. This factsheet discusses how vital it is that the National AIDS Trust's texts and presentations support the objectives of the 'Are you HIV prejudiced?' campaign by not using stigmatising language and terminology.

What is dementia?

The Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. They produce information and advice sheets to support those affected by dementia. This information sheet aims to answer questions of those who have been diagnosed with dementia.

Supporting families and carers of drug users : a review

This review examines the impact of drug use upon families and carers and identifies their needs. It examines and describes the range of provision and methods of addressing the needs of families and carers. It gives particular attention to the development of family support groups. It also offers information about resources available to agencies, service providers and family support groups.

HIV-related stigma & discrimination : sex workers

This factsheet discusses the HIV-related stigma and discrimination that sex workers face. They are marginalised and stigmatised because of their work and the fact that prostitution is still criminalised. Many sex workers are further marginalised because of their race or their sexuality, drug taking behaviour and poverty. All these factors increase stigmatisation experienced by sex workers and make them extremely vulnerable to HIV infection.
