This learning object introduces you to definitions of poverty and social exclusion, key facts and figures about poverty and its effects in the UK. After thinking about meanings of poverty and social exclusion in the Introduction, you will have the chance to do a Quiz which is based on government figures on child poverty from 2004 to 2005 (because of the complexity of the data collection process these are the most recent available). This learning object also includes a series of video interviews with services users.

Closing the opportunity gap programme: phase 1 evaluation (Research findings no.1)

Paper summarising the main findings of an interim evaluation of the Scottish Executive's Closing the Opportunity Gap (CtOG) social inclusion strategy.

The study assessed initial progress towards achieving CtOG aims, objectives and targets up to 2007. The research encompassed secondary analysis of CtOG monitoring data, survey analysis and interviews with key stakeholders.

HIV-related stigma & discrimination : prisoners

This factsheet highlights the low social status of prisoners and how this can mean they are marginalised and excluded from the mainstream of society. They experience stigma and discrimination behind bars and are often regarded as 'unworthy' in the general community. Prisoners face discrimination because of their status as 'prisoners' (i.e. criminal record and incarceration), because of what being in prison is associated with (drug use, same-sex activities and violence), and what it might lead to (HIV infection).

This learning object is designed to make you aware of these personal values and how they might impact on your practice. This learning object explores the way that personal values can effect the way you deal with families and seeks to help make practitioners aware of the impact and implications that this can have. You will be asked to capture your initial thoughts relating to 3 case study images depicting different aspects of family life.

Survival skills : using life skills to tackle social exclusion

Report making the case for life skills training taking a central role in the provision of support and services for people at risk of social exclusion if these services are to be properly effective. It discusses the correct definition of life skills and presents a case study of a project for homeless people which has incorporated life skills development into its services.
