Empowerment of rural women in Northern Ireland: impacts on poverty, development and current challenges

Paper that provides an overview of the main approaches being taken to the alleviation of rural poverty and rural development as well as exploring whether these approaches have specifically targeted or benefitted rural women.

The paper also identifies some of the key issues still impacting on rural women that need to be addressed both present and future within Northern Ireland.

Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance

The Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance (SIAA) was set up as a result of the work undertaken by its predecessor, Advocacy 2000, a three-year project set up to look at the needs of the Advocacy Movement in Scotland, and how these could be supported in the future. The SIAA is devoted to the promotion, support and defence of Independent Advocacy in Scotland. It is a membership organisation that has the overall aim of ensuring that Independent advocacy is available to any vulnerable person in Scotland.

Justice for Europe's children : the sixth Kilbrandon child care lecture

This resource is the sixth in a series of lectures designed to honour the memory and achievement of Lord Kilbrandon who wrote one of the most influential policy statements on how a society should deal with 'children in trouble'. This lecture discusses Council of Europe treaties, standard setting, the promotion of rights and juvenile justice.

Empowerment, racist incidents and casework practice

Casework practice is the process whereby, for example, housing officers, anti-social behaviour officers and neighbourhood wardens work with a tenant who has reported a racist incident to help resolve a complaint. This article focuses on the need for racist/hate incident case workers to be aware of the value of empowerment, and to be able to offer an empowering service when working directly with clients.

This resource is the report of an event organised by the Advocacy Safeguards Agency in collaboration with the Scottish Council on Deafness, the British Deaf Association, the National Deaf Children’s Society, Deaf Children’s Society for East of Scotland and AdvoCard. It looks at the advocacy needs of the deaf community.

Empowering communities to influence local decision making: evidence-based lessons for policy makers and practitioners

This report draws on a systematic review of published evidence to provide lessons on empowerment for policy makers and practitioners. It aims to enable the development of workable activities for empowerment underpinned by a sound evidence base. It focuses on six key mechanisms that facilitate empowerment: asset transfer; citizen governance; electronic participation; participatory budgeting; petitions; redress.

Episode one of the Scottish Recovery Network's Journeys of Recovery podcast features the stories Bring on Las Vegas and the Pink Cadillac!, The House that Recovery Built and It's Never Too Late.

The narrative was derived from an interview conducted as part of the 'Recovering mental health in Scotland' (2007) for the Scottish Recovery Network. It was collaboratively written by interviewer and interviewee and is available in print form in the 'Journeys of recovery' booklet produced by the SRN.
