Introduction of final dates for prescribed descriptions of social service workers to achieve registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC)

This paper proposes the setting of final dates for achievement of registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) for social workers and social service workers through the introduction of the Regulation of Care (Fitness to Employees for Employment in Care Services) (Scotland) Regulations 2008.

The legislation applies to full and part time workers, not to volunteers or workers in seasonal services.

Experts by Experience

'Experts by Experience' is suitable for use throughout law learning. The materials will: introduce users to how service users and carers have experienced legal interventions by social workers; identify how experts by experience identify good and poor practice by social workers; present what experts by experience suggest are the essential knowledge, skills and values that social workers should have and how they should use them; present key messages for social workers on what is really important for service users and carers when legal interventions are being used.

Disciplining children: research with parents in Scotland

This report presents the findings of research with parents relating to disciplining children. It was carried out between March and August 2002 when consideration was being given to changing the law in relation to physical discipline. The research was designed to provide information about attitudes and behaviours amongst parents in Scotland and had two main components.

This report, created by the Audit Commission, looks at how the Human Rights Act can help to improve public services, as it seeks to ensure the delivery of quality services that meet the needs of individual service users.

The report highlights that not only has the Act increased public service providers’ awareness of the rights of the individual, but it has also meant an increased risk of legal challenge by service users.

Operation of the homeless persons legislation in Scotland: 2007-08

This statistics publication provides information on applications to local authorities for assistance under the homeless persons legislation covering the period to 31 March 2008.

It includes information on the characteristics of applicant households, local authority assessments and the action taken in respect of cases concluded. Snapshot data on households in temporary accommodation at 31 March are presented, together with data on the implementation of the Homeless Persons (Unsuitable Accommodation) (Scotland) Order 2004.

Fear of the Unknown : addressing fears, myths, attitudes and values around child protection issues

The aim of this workshop is to dispel the fears of people who are relatively new to child protection issues, and those who feel it is a muddy area of legislation and uncomfortable procedures for themselves and the children and young people they work with.

The beauty of this workshop is it can be used for introduction to child protection issues or to update existing knowledge or beliefs. The exercise lasts between 1 to 3 hours and is suitable for groups of 3 to 20.
