The aim of this review was to provide an overview of the ideas and research evidence on child abuse and child protection in order to inform the work of the child protection review team. It is predominantly a review of UK research evidence. In some areas, however, UK evidence was found to be lacking and reference has been made to research from the US, Australia and elsewhere.

Recent migration into Scotland: the evidence base

This report reviews evidence on the impact of migration into Scotland since 2004, when the accession of the A8 countries - Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia - to the European Union resulted in increased migration into the UK. The review includes available evidence in relation to other groups, including asylum seekers and refugees. The review uses evidence from a range of published and unpublished sources, including datasets, surveys and qualitative studies, across the two main areas of economic and employment impacts and social impacts.

Young carers: assessments and services - literature review of identification, needs assessment and service provision for young carers and their families

This literature review examines the ways in which young carers come to the attention of voluntary and statutory agencies, and factors inhibiting identification. It identifies the ways in which young carers’ needs are assessed and it examines approaches to service provision by both statutory and voluntary agencies. The review also identifies approaches that are successful in meeting the social, educational and health needs of young carers.

Protection of vulnerable adults: monitoring report 2007-2008

Report that sets out significant data collated by Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) in relation to allegations of abuse against adults. It examines the key findings for the year ended 31 March 2008, providing an analysis of the information and a description of trends, concerns and achievements. It then considers what the data says about the state of adult protection services in Wales.

Falkirk Child Protection Committee Annual Report and Action Plan 2005 - 2006

The Committee set itself a challenging action plan and this annual report sets out what action has been taken forward individually and collectively over the last year in pursuance of stronger and more effective child protection services. The report also contains an action plan for the year ahead in which a number of commitments are made which are designed to ensure continuous improvement of the services provided across the Falkirk area.

Clinical and social care governance is described as a framework within which Health and Personal Social Services organisations can demonstrate their accountability for continuous improvement in the quality of services and for safeguarding high standards of care and treatment.

The Strategic Isolation of the British Drugs Field and new Recovery Philosophy.

In March 2008, a new 10 year national drugs strategy document was published: Drugs: protecting families and communities. This new drug strategy presents an agenda which strongly reinforces the main points of the last strategy with its emphasis on crime reduction and community safety. Like its predecessor, it says less about individual health and social outcomes. In the same month the United Kingdom Drug Policy Commission, (UKDPC), an independent think tank, published a major report on the drugs strategy and its key focus criminal justice.

Smart technology and community care for older people : innovation in West Lothian, Scotland

Report evaluating West Lothian Council's approach to the care and support of older people at home in which smart technology is integrated into a model of care which stresses choice, independence and capacity building for older people and aims to support them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. The evaluation looked at the views and experiences of stakeholders and the cost effectiveness of the programme.

Advocacy for Children and Young People in Scotland

This draft report summarises the key findings of a National Research Study conducted by the Advocacy Safeguards Agency. The study looked at why children and young people need advocacy, the laws relating to children and advocacy and the views young people hold about advocacy including what they would look for in an advocate. The report also identifies types of advocacy, barriers and enablers to advocacy, and examines the issues raised by adults interviewed about advocacy.
