Devolving housing benefit: a discussion paper

CIH Scotland and the SFHA commissioned the authors to write a short discussion paper that considers the scope and implications of devolving UK-reserved Housing Benefit (HB) to Scotland. The first section outlines the policy context and the second section explores the practicalities, risks and challenges of devolving housing benefit under current constitutional arrangements (that is, with social security treated as a reserved function).

Age, home and community: a strategy for housing for scotland's older people: 2012 - 2021

Strategy that proposes ways in which we can all help to realise the aspirations of enabling older people to live independently at home.

It is aimed not only at those who are older now, but also at people preparing for retirement, who need to consider options for older age before they reach it. The focus is on prevention and giving people the choices they need to live the best lives possible.

Rethinking disability policy

Viewpoint that reviews some aspects of disability policy since the early 1990s before making a detailed assessment of the current polices being introduced by the Coalition Government.

Themes discussed include:

- Welfare reform
- Personalisation policies and adult social care
- The political and economic context of disability policy
- The changes disabled people should be campaigning for.

Completing the revolution: transforming mental health and tackling poverty

Mental health is an issue that the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) has considered in many of its previous reports, particularly those relating to family breakdown, criminal justice (courts and sentencing and prison reform), children in care and street gangs. Its work focusing on the poorest communities has highlighted time and again the extremely high prevalence of mental ill-health and the compounding effect that it has on people and families already battling to live amongst challenging circumstances.

SCIE report 2: working with families with alcohol, drug and mental health problems

This report focuses on the policies and practices that can promote integrated services to families. It makes a number of recommendations for improving joint practice, some of which are listed below. The guide is aimed at senior managers and social care workers in children's services and adults' services in local authorities. It is also aimed at workers and managers in other services that may be involved with families with alcohol and mental health problems such as local health services. Report published by in June 2003.
