Personal budgets briefing: learning from the experiences of older people and their carers (At a glance 40)

A summary of older people’s and carers’ experiences of using self-directed support and personal budgets. It is based on a six month study, which also included people with mental health problems.

The research was commissioned from a joint team from Acton Shapiro, the National Centre for Independent Living (NCIL) and the Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU).

Preventing Crisis for Carers - The Moffat Project

The Moffat Charitable Trust “Preventing Crisis for Carers” project was been established to enable Princess Royal Trust for Carers centres to work with their local statutory partners, and other carers’ centres within their health board, to identify carers at the earliest possible stage and promote the development of good working practices around processes such as hospital discharge planning and carers’ assessments.

This ‘At a glance’ briefing highlights some of the emerging findings from research and practice regarding risk taking and safety in the implementation of self-directed support and personal budgets. The briefing summarises research findings from UK and international studies and emerging practice. The aim is to highlight evidence of what may help or hinder risk enablement and adult safeguarding in the context of promoting independence, choice and control. It also provides some examples of how practice is developing.
