Effective Interventions Unit : evaluation guide 2 : planning an evaluation

This is the second evaluation guide in the Effective Interventions Unit Evaluation series. This guide aims to explain the planning stage of an evaluation by describing the steps necessary in planning both an intervention and an associated evaluation, identifying some general questions to address when planning an intervention, and outlining some questions that evaluations commonly tackle.

To help illustrate the main points in this guide, an example of a fictitious outreach needle exchange service is used.

National programme for improving mental health and well-being: small research projects initiative 2005-06 - Mellow Babies

The Mellow Babies intervention was designed to develop close attunement between the mother and the child using a combination of baby-massage, interaction coaching and infant focused speech.

A waiting-list-controlled evaluation of the Mellow Babies intervention is described.

The objectives were to measure change in maternal depressive symptoms and the quality of interaction between mothers and babies. Recruitment was less than had been hoped, but for those mothers who completed the group, feedback from referrers and participants was positive.

Accountability and intervention

Accountability and intervention is suitable for use towards the end of law learning but before summative assessment. It explores the impact of law on how social workers work, in particular: how legal rules influence the process of decision-making (rather than content); and how social work values influence our approach.

Introducing yourself
