Early Intervention: Securing good outcomes for all children and young people

Today, it is widely agreed by experts across the world that early intervention can be of enormous benefit to children. That is why, as this paper sets out, the government is investing in a number of evidence-based prevention and early intervention programmes and supporting their roll out across the country.

This document draws together a wealth of research and good practice with the aim of supporting Children’s Trust Boards and their constituent partners to bring greater consistency, rigour and impact to the way early intervention is organised and delivered locally.

Evidence Based Practice and Policy Online Resource Training Center (EBPP)

The Evidence Based Practice and Policy (EBPP) Online Resource Training Center, is sponsored by the Willma and Albert Musher Program at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW).

The online center’s broad goal is to promote evidence based practice and policy in social work. It provides training materials, publications, and other resources to aid practitioners from a variety of helping professions in the process of formulating sound professional judgments that necessarily precede, shape, and direct thoughtfully selected assessments and interventions.

Charlene : Drug Misuse : A Case Narrative

This is a case narrative detailing the story of a young child Charlene and her mother Jane, who has a history of inappropriate (sometimes violent) relationships and drug misuse. There are a number of concerns about Charlene who is eventually removed from Jane’s care. This case scenario can be used to illustrate a number of issues, including drug misuse, partnership work, good practice in investigation, and assessment in training contexts.

Addressing the needs of children of substance using parents: an evaluation of Families First's intensive intervention - final report

Report of a study carried out to identify the processes involved in service delivery, including intervention approach, the implementation and integrity of Families First, a multi-component support service for adults and families with substance use issues, interagency working together with the outcomes of intervention for participating families.

First Impressions : emotional and practical support for families of a young child with a learning disability

First Impressions was commissioned in early 2004, in order to look at the emotional and practical needs of families who have a small child – aged up to five – with a learning disability. This report looks at the support needed by these families, including the way in which parents are informed about their child’s learning disability. The impact on the family is examined and practical and strategic recommendations that can improve emotional and practical support for families with a young disabled child are detailed.

Serious violent and sexual offenders: the use of risk assessment tools in Scotland

This report is organised into six chapters and explores a range of issues including the approaches to risk assessment by different professional groups and the progress of validation in respect of the different risk assessment tools in use. Comment is made on risk assessment in action, who carries out risk assessments, how they are carried out and the mechanisms that are in place to ensure a consistent approach to risk assessment within organisations.

Social Services Inspectorate audit of services to children in need in response to the practice recommendations of the Victoria Climbie inquiry

This report contains a framework of recommendations set out by the Social Services Inspectorate in response to the outcomes of the Public Inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbie. This framework is to be used by councils with social services responsibilities to audit their position in relation to the practice recommendations of the Victoria Climbié Inquiry report. It provides performance criteria against each of the recommendations linked to statutory requirements and guidance.

Children's hearings : The second Kilbrandon child care lecture (1995)

The second in a series of lectures designed to honour the memory and achievement of Lord Kilbrandon who wrote one of the most influential policy statements on how a society should deal with 'children in trouble'. The lecture was delivered by Fred Stone - Emeritus Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Glasgow - on 12 October 1995.

The Victoria Climbie Inquiry

This is the full Report of the Public Inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbie by Lord Laming. The Report investigates the events surrounding Victoria's last few months and examines the local social services arrangements involved in the case. It reviews the lack of good practice and gross failure of the system in this case and makes recommendations with regard to improvements at national and local level.
