In-work poverty, ethnicity and workplace cultures

Research that is part of JRF’s focus on the links between poverty and ethnicity, and examines the role of workplace cultures in routes out of poverty for people of all ethnicities.

With a high representation of ethnic minorities in low-paid work, and falling demand for low-level skills, this publication reveals the need for skills development and career progression for all employees.

Enjoy, achieve and be healthy: the mental health of Black and minority ethnic children and young people

Document that is based on work undertaken between October 2010 and March 2011 and is presented in two parts. The first section highlights the need for greater consideration to be given to meeting the needs of Black and minority ethnic children and young people in all aspects of children’s services provision. Some of the key themes, policies and programmes are summarised and questions raised about their application to engage with and effectively address the needs of Black and minority ethnic children, young people and their families.

Social networks, poverty and ethnicity

Paper that briefly reviews evidence and current thinking about the links between social networks and poverty, and explores how dimensions of ‘race’ and ethnicity affect how these operate for people living in the UK.

It focuses mainly on the experiences of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities and identifies how social network effects contribute to the occurrence of poverty, coping strategies and routes out of poverty.

Community consultation on poverty and ethnicity in Scotland

This study explores participants' experiences of poverty, their coping strategies and views on potential solutions. It involved interviews with 32 participants from four ethnic backgrounds (white Scottish, East European, Gypsy/Travellers and Chinese) in two Scottish regions: Fife and Highland. Stakeholders from the public and voluntary sectors were also consulted. Report published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in April 2011.

Ethnic diversity and inequality: ethical and scientific rigour in social research

This research addresses the increasing need for research to inform policy and practice development that is sensitive to the diversity of the UK's multiethnic population. Emphasis was given to the importance of ensuring that any guidance developed and promoted should be regularly appraised in light of the evolving social world and ethical and scientific standards. Research published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in March 2011.

Poverty and ethnicity in Scotland: review of the literature and datasets

This study reviews literature and datasets to establish the main patterns, themes and issues from research on ethnicity and poverty in Scotland and to identify key sources of statistical information. This review considers vulnerability to, and experiences of, poverty in terms of income and employment, housing, education and health. Published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in April 2011

Prevention and response to identity-based bullying among local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales

This project was commissioned by the Equality and Human Rights Commission in December 2009 with the aim of providing an insight into identity-based bullying of young people in schools and in the wider community, and examining the preventative and responsive strategies currently being used to address it in local authorities across England, Scotland and Wales.
