A problem shared: making best use of resources in adult social care

Report designed to support sector-led improvement. It aims to:

  • review the evidence about how budget reductions have been achieved so far, and draw out lessons that can be learned
  • pull together messages from research and guidance produced since 2009
  • reinforce the importance of benchmarking, sharing good practice and developing a stronger, more accessible evidence base
  • suggest some next steps, including further tools and guidance that could help the sector manage future budget pressures.

Overview of outcome measurement for adults using social care services and support (Methods review 6)

This review discusses the measurement of outcome for individuals and their carers for research purposes, particularly the type of research which evaluates the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of social care for adults and which has implications for social care practice. It discusses what is meant by outcome in social care, presenting a model that describes different ‘types’ of outcome and how these are related to one another.

Research governance and ethics for adult social care research: procedures, practices and challenges

Review that describes the development of research governance arrangements in social care settings over the past decade and examines some of the consequences – both problems and opportunities – created for people who are interested in research: that is, people who undertake research, take part in it, and use it within adult social care settings.

Another way: transforming peoples' lives through good practice in adult social care

The group of people that concerns this report include those with severe and complex needs, with sensory impairments or who have a autistic spectrum disorder.

Exploring how practitioners support and protect adults at risk of harm in the light of the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007

Joint research project between the University of Stirling, East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk and Perth and Kinross Councils.

Improving access to social care for adults with autism

Guide that looks at how social care services can improve access to adults with autism.

It is based on research that explores the barriers to services experienced by people with autism. It covers people with autism, whether or not they also have a learning disability.

The guide suggests ways services can improve, identifying how best to meet the goals of the government's autism strategy.

Risky business?

Paper that sets important issues relating to positive risk-taking in adult social care in a legal context; considers how current care provision impacts on the human rights of service users; and analyses the extent to which the present regulatory and commissioning frameworks stifle or encourage risk-taking in adult social care.
