Parental mental health : messages from research, policy and practice

This review focuses on one particular aspect of parenting and family life. It is about children living in families where a parent has mental health problems. The aim of this review is to identify – from a range of publications – sources and messages that might help practitioners and managers improve their understanding of the circumstances of children and families living with parental mental health problems, and find responses that have the potential for achieving positive change.

Rethink factsheets

The Rethink National Advice Service provides information and advice to people with mental illness, their family, friends, informal and professional carers on a range of issues affecting people with mental illness and their carers. They run a telephone advice line and an email advice service as well as taking written enquiries. This links to s series of about 40 factsheets in PDF.

Understanding dual diagnosis

Mind is a leading mental health charity in England and Wales and has produced information on many areas of mental health. 'Dual diagnosis' is used in the health services to describe people with mental health problems, who also misuse drugs or alcohol. This booklet is for anyone who wants to know more about this.

Making us count : identifying and improving mental health support for young people with learning disabilities : report summary

This resource is a brief summary of the research programme and report 'Making us count' by the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities. The research centred on four projects, covering a wide range of young people. The starting point for all the projects was the young people themselves – their thoughts, their feelings and their views.

Investigating Crime using the British Crime Survey

This resource uses the study of crime in society to show how existing data sources can be utilised, and as such, this project is relevant to a range of social science disciplines, such as sociology, politics, psychology and media studies. The project is also relevant to citizenship studies. The resources can be used for A level syllabi but are also highly applicable for undergraduate and postgraduate learning.

Depression

The Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. They produce information and advice sheets to support those affected by dementia. Depression and dementia share many of the same symptoms. This can make it difficult to identify when people with dementia become depressed. This information sheet looks at depression and how it can affect people with dementia. It also suggests ways to help.
