Government expenditure on the voluntary sector in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

After 25 years of systematic data-collection and publication, the UK Government is currently no longer producing information on its spending in the voluntary sector across the UK: its last publication of these figures was for the years 2005-06.

It is now only possible to analyse current government spending in the voluntary sector in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, where data-gathering continues. This article analyses their data for the years 2004-05 to 2008-09.

Aiming high for disabled children misses funding targets

The government launched its Aiming High for Disabled Children's programme for May 2007 to bring about a transformation of services across health and social care. Funding was provided to local authorities and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs). However, local authorities are reporting difficulties in getting PCTs to commit to developing services. In addition, funding for the programme has not been ring fenced and it is often not possible to identify what has been spent on disabled children.

What factors predict differences in infant and perintal mortality in primary care trusts in England? A prognostic model.

To identify predictors of perinatal and infant mortality variations between primary care trusts (PCTs) in England prognostic multivariable mixed models were used. For each PCT, data on the number of infant and perinatal deaths, ethnicity, deprivation, maternal age, PCT spending on maternal services, and "Spearhead" status (those PCTs with the worst health and deprivation indicators requiring special attention) were collected.

Drug and alcohol services in Scotland

Drug and alcohol misuse are major problems in Scotland but resources to address them are not always used effectively. In this study, published information on services was analysed and national documents were reviewed, expenditure data from all NHS boards and councils were collected and analysed and activity data from all police forces in Scotland were collected to give an indication of expenditure.
