Refuge for young runaways in the UK: a critical overview

This report deals with the concept of 'refuge' for children under the age of sixteen who are away from home or care, as established under section 51 of the Children's Act 1989 and section 38 of The Children's (Scotland) Act 1995. It discusses the factors affecting its provision in the UK and goes on to detail a series of pilot programmes, run between 2004-2006. These were funded by the Department of Health and the Department for Education and Skills, aimed to extend the models of community-based refuge.

Boarding school provision for vulnerable children: pathfinder evaluation

This is an evaluation report of the Boarding Provision for Vulnerable Children Pathfinder announced in the white paper 'Higher standards, better schools for all' (2005). The Pathfinder was intended to explore whether boarding school provision might be used to provide support, stability and improved life chances for a larger number of vulnerable children and young people. Ten local authorities and fifty boarding schools originally signed up to the Pathfinder.

The study 'Multi professional communication: making systems work for children' by Georgian Glenny and Caroline Roaf, examined case studies over a seven year period in order to identify the ingredients of successful communication systems.

Associations between childhood bereavement and children's background, experiences and outcomes : secondary analysis of the 2004 Mental Health of Children and Young People in Great Britain data

Report of a study which explored the background characteristics, experiences and outcomes of bereaved children using a nationally representative sample of 5- to 16- year-olds living in the UK. It examined differences between children who experienced the death of a parent or sibling and those who experienced the death of a friend.

Children and families experiencing domestic violence: police and children's social services' responses

Research report from the University of Central Lancashire and the NSPCC, which examines the police notification process and subsequent service pathways followed by families brought to the attention of children's social services in this way. It also explores which other agencies contributed to services for families experiencing domestic violence and captures young people's, survivors' and perpetrators' views of services.

Sure Start children's centres : survey of parents

A survey of 1,496 parents and carers was carried out between August and October 2008 to quantify the reach (i.e. awareness and usage) of Sure Start Children’s Centres among the target population (that is, parents and carers of children aged under five years and expectant parents). The survey was limited to children’s centres which were designated by March 2006 and so had been established for several years.
