Demos

Demos is the think tank for everyday democracy. It believes everyone should be able to make personal choices in their daily lives that contribute to the common good.

Demos' aim is to put this democratic idea into practice by working with organisations in ways that make them more effective and legitimate. It focuses on six areas: public services; science and technology; cities and public space; people and communities; arts and culture; and global security.

The British Institute of Human Rights

The British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) is an independent charity based in London which raises awareness and understanding about the importance of human rights. It works for disadvantaged and vulnerable communities in the UK, seeking to ensure that the principles of equality, dignity and respect are incorporated into practice and policy at all levels of public service. The website includes details of programmes, events and training as well as FAQs and external web links.

Human rights, human lives: a handbook for public authorities

This guide is designed to assist officials in public authorities to implement the Human Rights Act 1998. It aims to raise your awareness of the different rights and freedoms protected by the Human Rights Act, and to demonstrate through actual examples, how to consider the potential human rights impact of the work of officials, whether they are delivering services directly to the public or devising new policies and procedures.

Report of the Disability Working Group

Report of the Disability Working Group and Executive Response. The report of the Disability Working Group sets out their recommendations for the Scottish Executive, local authorities, employers, educators, community care providers etc. Recommendations in the report provide both an agenda for immediate action and a platform to build onto improve equality for disabled people in Scotland.

Stop Violence Against Women

The Stop Violence Against Women website (STOPVAW) is a forum for information, advocacy and change. Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights developed this website as a tool for the promotion of women's human rights in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Mongolia, and the U.N. Protectorate of Kosovo. STOPVAW was developed with support from and in consultation with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Open Society Institute's Network Women's Program.

Review of the implementation of the Human Rights Act

This resource is a review which looks specifically at problems with the implementation of the Human Rights Act. The review was commissioned in the immediate aftermath of the Inquiry Report (by HM Chief Inspector of Probation) into the release of Anthony Rice, which had suggested that human rights arguments, and the Human Rights Act, had been contributory factors in the events leading to the murder of Naomi Bryant.
