Older people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds Accessing health and social care services in south GLasgow

The Advocacy Project works with older people and other groups across Glasgow and Lanarkshire to ensure their voice is heard, their needs met and their legal rights safeguarded.

The organisation identified a low take up of their own service by older people from BME communities, which was generally held to reflect the wider picture in Glasgow in relation to health and social work services.

Advocacy: Models and effectiveness (IRISS Insights, No. 20)

This Insight draws on evidence in relation to advocacy with both children and adults and on literature from the fields of health and social care. It outlines the key elements of the most prevalent models of advocacy and identifies good practice, as well as the limitations of advocacy models. The Insight will provide an overview of the evidence base of what works in relation to advocacy provision.

This knowledge review looks at the significant gap in high quality and effective mental health advocacy in African and Caribbean men. Drawing on individual accounts the research raises questions about the services, advice and support services currently being provided and what is actually needed by this over-represented group in the mental health sector. Katrina Robertson / People First Parents’ Group

People First (Scotland) is the national self-advocacy organisation of people with learning difficulties. People First (Scotland) became a company in 1989 and we now have around 1000 members from across Scotland. We support local People First groups in the different areas of Scotland from the Borders up to the Highlands. People First is run by a Board of Directors elected from the members in the different areas, all of whom have learning difficulties. Members support each other in the groups to speak up, to gain confidence and to stand up for our rights.
