Roma inclusion: a progressive and rights-based approach (General Policy Paper No. 7)

This seventh General Policy Paper by the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) is the product of ongoing concern and reflection regarding the development of progressive integration and social inclusion policies as a tool to combat racism.

It comes shortly after the EU designed and adopted a European Framework for National Roma Integration Strategies, an important step in acknowledging politically the need to improve Roma inclusion initiatives and policies and to combat segregation.

Are you saying I'm racist? An evaluation of work to tackle racist violence in three areas of London

Report that presents the results of a special initiative designed to develop methods for preventing young people from becoming involved in racist violence. The Preventing Racist Violence Special Initiative consists of three projects undertaken in South and East London, and has been funded by the Trust for London. The initiative was launched in January 2007 and the projects have now been in operation for over four years.

Empowerment, racist incidents and casework practice

Casework practice is the process whereby, for example, housing officers, anti-social behaviour officers and neighbourhood wardens work with a tenant who has reported a racist incident to help resolve a complaint. This article focuses on the need for racist/hate incident case workers to be aware of the value of empowerment, and to be able to offer an empowering service when working directly with clients.

North East Scotland Equalities Network (NESEN)

Grampian Racial Equality Council was established in the mid-1980s to tackle discrimination as defined by, and within the confines of, the Race Relations Act 1976, soon to be strengthened and complemented by the forthcoming Race Relations Act (Amendment) Bill and the Human Rights Act 1998. Although the Grampian Racial Equality Council was an autonomous, voluntary sector, organisation they work in partnership with the government body, the Commission for Racial Equality.

NESEN is a user-led Grampian wide Equality Network.

The Beveridge vision - OpenLearn

This Unit looks at the work of William Beveridge in reforming the field of social welfare after World War II. Particular attention is paid to the attitude towards women and immigrants to the United Kingdom.

European Network Against Racism

European Network Against Racism (ENAR), a network of European Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) working to combat racism in all the EU member states, is a major outcome of the 1997 European Year Against Racism. ENAR is determined to fight racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, to promote equality of treatment between EU citizens and third country nationals, and to link local/regional/national initiatives with European initiatives.

Racism is treating someone differently or unfairly simply because they belong to a different race or culture. People can also experience prejudice because of their religion or nationality.
