Puppet on a string: the urgent need to cut children free from sexual exploitation

Report that calls on the Secretary of State for Education to take the lead in ensuringa fundamental shift in policy, practiceand service delivery in England.

It makes the case for a minister, supported by dedicated officials, to take responsibility and set out a clear plan of action for all agencies to: raise awareness to improve early identification of child sexual exploitation, improve statutory responses and the provision of services, improve the evidence and improve prosecution procedures.

Out from the shadows: sexual violence against children with disabilities

Out of mind, out of sight: breaking down the barriers to understanding child sexual exploitation

This thematic assessment was undertaken with four principle objectives:

1. Assess the size and scale of ‘localised grooming’ in proportion to the overall known picture of sexual exploitation
of children under the age of 18 in the UK
2. Establish any patterns of offending profile or victim experience
3. Assess the effectiveness of processes which might help identify such offending or potential victims
4. Recommend action to be taken to reduce the risk in future, including any urgent action that becomes apparent.

Good practice guidance for the moderation of interactive services for children

This guidance was originally produced in 2005 following the reference in the previous good practice guidance – on chat, instant messaging and web based services – to the fact that some interactive services were “moderated” and others were not.

The importance of moderated services was seen within the context of public concern about online spaces, and in particular chatrooms, where children were potentially at risk from undesirable contact or behaviour from adults in order to “groom” and sexually abuse them.
