In-work poverty in the recession

The share of poor households accounted for by working households (as opposed to workless households) has been increasing in the UK over the last decade, with more than half of poor children living in working households before the recession. This note presents new data explaining what has happened to in-work poverty since the recession began, using newly released data covering the period April 2008 to March 2009.

Rebalancing local economies: widening economic opportunities for people in deprived communities

This is the final report of a major programme of work undertaken by ippr north, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and The Northern Way. The programme set out to understand why some deprived areas within city regions in the North of England have prospered whilst others have remained deprived even when the surrounding economy was performing strongly; to explore how deprived areas can be better linked to areas of economic opportunity; to consider the roles of local, sub-national and national bodies; and to inform a new generation of policies targeted at deprived neighbourhoods.

Monitoring poverty and social exclusion 2010

This report focuses on the 18-month recession of 2008 and 2009. Whilst highlighting recent success in preventing poverty worsening, it draws attention to several longstanding problems, including unemployment. It is too soon for the data in this report to reflect any impact of new policies from the Coalition Government, but it describes the subjects any new anti-poverty programme will need to address to match the scale and scope of the challenge.
