Rebalancing local economies: widening economic opportunities for people in deprived communities

This is the final report of a major programme of work undertaken by ippr north, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and The Northern Way. The programme set out to understand why some deprived areas within city regions in the North of England have prospered whilst others have remained deprived even when the surrounding economy was performing strongly; to explore how deprived areas can be better linked to areas of economic opportunity; to consider the roles of local, sub-national and national bodies; and to inform a new generation of policies targeted at deprived neighbourhoods.

How globalisation is changing patterns of marginalisation and inclusion in the UK

This paper explores the relationship between globalisation and the processes and patterns that determine the quality of life of communities in the UK; discusses how globalisation affects the labour market; and examines how governments and policy-makers should respond to the impacts of globalisation on poverty and inequality.

Legitimacy and procedural justice in prisons

A functioning correctional system depends on the orderly reproduction of a stable and acceptable prison environment. The argument in this paper has two parts: first, a key factor in the social order of a prison is the legitimacy of the prison regime in the eyes of inmates; and second, the legitimacy of authorities depends in large part upon the procedural fairness with which officers treat prisoners.

Grampian police return home welfare interview pilot for young runaways: pilot evaluation

The overall aim of this evaluation was to explore the most effective means of delivering Return Home Welfare Interviews (RHWIs) to ensure the best outcomes for the child/young person. It set out to examine the operation of the pilot as implemented in Aberdeen City and Elgin, to reflect the range of models of delivery used and the overall impact of the pilot. One area in Aberdeenshire (Fraserburgh) formed the control area to illustrate original practice in Grampian and current practice outwith the pilot areas.

Monitoring poverty and social exclusion 2010

This report focuses on the 18-month recession of 2008 and 2009. Whilst highlighting recent success in preventing poverty worsening, it draws attention to several longstanding problems, including unemployment. It is too soon for the data in this report to reflect any impact of new policies from the Coalition Government, but it describes the subjects any new anti-poverty programme will need to address to match the scale and scope of the challenge.

Globalisation, the media and UK communities

UK communities find themselves in an increasingly complex world of news mediation. There are more channels of information from around the world that provide more varied sources of topical data and comment than ever before. This paper seeks to chart the impact of changes in global media on low-income groups in the UK and community dynamics. It will explore how their mediated relationship to the local and global world is affected by current trends in media production and consumption.

The local impact of the global internet

This paper was commissioned as part of JRF's programme on Globalisation, which explores and promotes awareness of the impacts of globalisation on the UK and focuses on communities and people in poverty.
This paper:
* explains the implications of easier access to global communication;
* surveys the increasing use of the Internet in Britain and how this applies to local and global networks; and
* discusses how individuals and communities can build networks and the challenges this brings.
