Safe and appropriate care for young people on adult mental health wards

This practical toolkit sets standards for mental health professionals working with young people placed on adult mental health wards. The criteria have been developed in conjunction with young service users, parents, commissioners and practitioners in both Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) and CAMHS, and complement the Adult Inpatient Mental Health Services (AIMS) standard.

Removing barriers: the facts about mental health and employment

This paper looks at barriers to employment for people with mental health problems and at efforts that are being made to support their efforts to find and sustain work. Barriers include: stigma and discrimination; low expectations and a lack of resources; financial disincentives. There is some discussion of government policy and the Pathways to Work scheme.

Mental health care and the criminal justice system

This briefing paper examines the provision of mental health care in the criminal justice system. It looks at what has been achieved to date and identifies priorities for further work. It starts with an overview of the prison population, looking at ethnicity, gender, young people and Imprisonment for Public Protection.

The section on mental health care in prison covers: identifying mental health problems; transfer to NHS care; primary mental health care; dual diagnosis; personality disorders. Alternatives to imprisonment including diversion and community sentences are discussed.

Clustering booklet: for use in mental health payment by results evaluation work (July-Dec 2009)

Booklet designed to help in the preparation for mental health Payment by Results. This clustering booklet contains the assessment tool (HoNOS PbR) and the 21 clusters developed by the Care Pathways and Packages Project.

Service users will need to be assessed and 'assigned' to the relevant cluster. As peoples needs change overtime they will need to be re-assessed and re-clustered periodically. The clustering booklet is time-limited as work continues across the NHS to refine and validate both the assessment and the clusters.
