Understanding Resilience

The objective of this learning object is to understand the concept of ‘resilience’ and the value of ‘protective factors’ in planning to support vulnerable children. This resource contains information on risk, research evidence, protective factors and the ecological model as well as resilient children and protective environments.

Mental health, resilience and inequalities

This report aims to demonstrate how poor mental health is a significant cause of wider social and health problems, including: low levels of educational achievement and work productivity; higher levels of physical disease and mortality; violence, relationship breakdown and poor community cohesion. In contrast, good mental health leads to better physical health, healthier lifestyles, improved productivity and educational attainment and lower levels of crime and violence.

Childhood and Adolescent Mental Health : understanding the lifetime impacts

In April 2004 the Office of Health Economics and the Mental Health Foundation held a seminar focusing on the economics of childhood and adolescent mental health as part of their commitment to improving mental health provision for children and young people in the UK. This report is an attempt to draw together the themes from the discussions, along with general conclusions from the day.

Parenting and children's resilience in disadvantaged communities

This resource suggests that there has been relatively little research about the distinctive challenges of bringing up children in disadvantaged areas, nor of children’s perspectives on identifying and managing threats. In particular, it highlights that little is known about how parents and children promote their children’s well-being and safeguard them from day-to-day risks.

Resilient nation

Pamphlet looking at the ways in which the UK can build and sustain community resilience in the face of disasters with support from central and local government, relevant agencies, the emergency services and voluntary organisations. It identifies the main principles of community resilience as being engagement, education, empowerment and encouragement.

Children and domestic violence : a research overview of the impact on children

This resource looks at the question of the impact of domestic violence on children and examines some of the research on intervention and what can be done to promote better outcomes. The review aims examines the definition of domestic violence and the gendered pattern of abuse; the experiences of children living with domestic violence and the overlap with other forms of abuse; the impact on children of living with domestic violence; the problems associated with post-separation violence; and policy implications and practice interventions.
