Equally different: report on the situation of older lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgendered people in Thanet, Kent

This report has been compiled by 'Opening Doors in Thanet', a group of older people living in the Isle of Thanet, who are aware of and want to help service-providers understand the difficulties, and improve the lives, of Lesbian, Gay Bi-sexual and Transgendered (LGBT) older people. It is based on the results of a questionnaire sent out to sheltered housing providers, residential homes, nursing homes, care companies and day centres catering for the older population of Thanet.

Life as an adult (Radio 4 series: The seven ages of humanity)

Four Radio 4 programmes in a series about the health and wellbeing of the seven ages of humanity, presented by Connie St Louis. These four programmes explore the adult years of 20-40.

The first programme looks at how the fully formed body functions, the second discusses sex and relationships, the third examines mental health in early adulthood, and the final programme discusses lifestyle and keeping active.

Social Work Curriculum on Alcohol Use Disorders

The big blue book of booze

The aims of this resource are to present the facts about alcohol in a realistic and down-to-earth way; to identify safe limits to drinking; to identify the risks of unsafe sex when intoxicated; clearly identify alcohol as a strong drug and to show heavy drinking as unattractive and anti-social. The target audience for this publication is young people aged 13+ in schools and youth club settings.

Gay, lesbian and bi-sexual muslims (Radio 4 series: Thinking Allowed)

This episode of Radio 4's Thinking Allowed series includes a segment on gay, lesbian and bisexual muslims in view of the fact that non-heterosexuality is strictly censored in Islamic religious texts. This year the Sociological Review published an article by Andrew Yip called 'Negotiating Space with Family and Kin in Identity Construction: the Narratives of Non-heterosexual Muslims'.

Being Positive

Being Positive, a two-part investigative Open University/BBC series, examines the nature of the AIDS virus, how it works and the history of the development of HIV drug treatments. Part one, Dead Unlucky and part two, Dead Lucky, follow the stories of people who have been infected. This resource is part of the Open2.net website which is the online learning portal from the Open University and the BBC.

Lesbianism (Radio 4 series: Woman's Hour)

This episode of Radio 4's Woman's Hour series looks at how being a lesbian has changed. Jenni Murray talks to Clare Summerskill about her new play, Gateway to Heaven which is based entirely on the memories of older lesbians and gay men. Their stories are an eye-opener on a time when lesbians and gay men were significantly more constrained, both legally and socially, than they are today.
