A child's legal rights At a glance

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has been signed by 197 countries including the UK.Most parents make sure that their children grow up with care and support. Most schools do everything they can to make school a good experience. Some children, especially those phoning ChildLine, say that they feel they have no control at home and in school.

United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 2008 concluding observations : report of a national consultation with young people to determine their priorities for action

Report setting out the findings of a consultation exercise in which the views of young people from all over Scotland were canvassed on the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child's concluding observations to find out how aware children and young people were about children's rights and which rights were most important to them.

World drug report 2009

Report containing comprehensive information on the illicit drug situation including detailed estimates and trends on production, trafficking and consumption in the heroin, cocaine, cannabis and stimulants markets. It also details trends in drug use among young people and discusses the black market in drugs and what the international community can do to tackle it.

Improving the lives of children in Scotland - are we there yet? Findings from national seminars: January-February 2009

The Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights (SACR) was asked by the government to organise four seminars designed to allow professional and interested parties in Scotland to gather together to discuss the United Nations Committee for the Rights of the Child recommendations.

Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People and the Children’s Rights Officers’ Network worked with SACR in organising the events.

United Nations convention on the rights of the child 2008 concluding observations: report of a national consultation with young people to determine their priorities for action

In late summer of 2008, Young Scot was commissioned by the Scottish Government to seek the views of young people from across Scotland on what they thought about the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child's Concluding Observations relating to the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child (UNCRC). The consultation explored the levels of awareness children and young people had regarding children's rights and their thoughts on which rights were most important for them, and for Scotland as a whole, to take action on.

Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and optional protocol

The Convention is made up of 50 articles which are given in full. The Convention clarifies and qualifies how all categories of rights apply to persons with disabilities and identifies areas where adaptations have to be made for persons with disabilities to effectively exercise their rights and areas where their rights have been violated, and where protection of rights must be reinforced.
