This resource is the sixth in a series of lectures designed to honour the memory and achievement of Lord Kilbrandon who wrote one of the most influential policy statements on how a society should deal with 'children in trouble'. This lecture discusses Council of Europe treaties, standard setting, the promotion of rights and juvenile justice.

Healthy children, safer communities: a strategy to promote the health and well-being of children and young people in contact with the youth justice system

This cross government document aims to help tackle youth crime and anti-social behaviour, and contribute to community safety in England. It sets out a strategic approach to inform the work of the Healthy Children, Safer Communities programme board to fulfil the vision that children and young people will be safer, healthier and stay away from crime.

Mentoring (Radio 4 series: Woman's Hour)

This episode of Radio 4's Woman's Hour series looks at mentoring and if young people who are likely to fall foul to the law could be identified before they actually offend. The Community Service Volunteers has set up a scheme which has already proved successful. The Mentors and Peers (MAP) project matches young people with volunteer mentors who meet regularly for a period of six months. One such young person is 11 year old Bobby who is anxious to avoid the fate of elder brothers who have served prison sentences.

Multi-agency approach and the youth justice system; Ageing (Radio 4 series: Thinking Allowed)

This episode of Radio 4's Thinking Allowed series consists of two segments. In the first Laurie Taylor is joined by Rob Hornsby who as a trainee sociologist got an insight into the current workings of the Youth Justice System when he worked as an Appropriate Adult at a police station, supporting young offenders following their initial arrest.

Young people, crime and public perceptions: a review of the literature

This research report addresses the perceptions of youth crime portrayed by the media and held by the public at large. It attempts to answer questions such as; has there been a change in levels of youth crime in recent years?; what is the current public perception of youth crime?; where perceptions of crime differ greatly from the reality, what are the underlying reasons for this? It seeks answers from the literature and self-report surveys, in particular, the British Crime Survey (BCS).

The first looks at how appropriate a western notion of secularism is in dealing with the complexities of a multi-faith society. Laurie Taylor is joined by Rajeev Bhargava, Professor of Political Science at the University of Delhi and Anshuman Mondal, Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Literature at the University of Leicester, to debate whether western secularism has outlived its purpose and if anything can be learnt from the Indian model of secularism.

Joint inspection of youth offending teams: end of programme report 2003-2008

This is a review of the joint inspection programme of youth offending teams in England and Wales. it charts the evolution of youth offending work throughout this period, taking care to look at both the criminal justice and children's services elements. It gives a broad overview of the progress made over the five year period and comments on the programme of inspections with which it will be replaced.

Report on young offenders in adult establishments

This is a report on an inspection of the conditions in which male and female young offenders are held and the treatment they receive in smaller units within adult establishments in Scotland. The inspection took place in November 2008. The report covers young offenders in Friarton Hall (Perth Prison), Darroch Hall (Green Prison) and Bruce House (Cornton Vale Prison). A number of observations are noted and some recommendations are made for Bruce House.
