The contribution of social work and social care to the reduction of health inequalities: four case studies

This briefing argues that support given as social care can help improve health and reduce health disadvantage. Improving access to social care interventions is therefore important to any strategy for reducing health inequality. The concept of health inequalities refers to the avoidable health disadvantage people experience as a result of adverse social factors, such as lack of economic or social capital, or marginalisation. People with higher socio-economic position in society have better life chances and more opportunities to flourish. They also have better health.

Fairness in an ageing society

Every political party's election manifesto should include an outline of long term entitlements to highlight a commitment to treating older people fairly, according to a report by housing and care provider Housing 21, Fair ageing: the challenge of our lifetime. The report brings together key messages and themes to emerge from a series of events organised by the Fabian Society for Housing 21 in partnership with Counsel and Care - the Fairness in an Ageing Society programme.

This analysis was undertaken in-house within the Scottish Government by using large scale data from the 2007/8 Scottish Household Survey Culture (and Sport) Module. It explores the role of childhood encouragement to participate in and attend cultural activities in promoting cultural participation and attendance in adult life.

Supporting the development of Scotland's alcohol and drug workforce

This is a joint Scottish Government and CoSLA statement which is addressed to anyone who has a role in improving outcomes for an individual, families or communities experiencing problematic drug and alcohol use. A statement which sets out the aim of identifying all actions required to deliver the alcohol and drug workforce and to outline the important roles and contributions of those directly involved in workforce development.

This paper, commissioned as part of JRF's Housing Market Taskforce programme, also:
* examines the problems associated with current housing legislation, particularly on social housing; and
* outlines options for the reform of tenure and assesses their likely impact on vulnerable groups and housing market volatility.

Coaching and consolidating the practice of Newly Qualified social Workers: A Brief Literature Review

Social Work Resources, South Lanarkshire Council prepared this report with an overall aim of reviewing literature that could inform whether and in what ways a formal coaching approach could add value in consolidating Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSW).
The main purpose this briefing was to detail the evidence that could support the South Lanarkshire Social Work Resources Learning and Development Team develop a programme of induction that will facilitate the professional development and consolidation of good practice in newly qualified workers.
