The 2011 Panorama programme about the abuse of people with learning disabilities at a private hospital (Winterbourne View) reignited the debate about institutional care, and raised public awareness and concern about the treatment of some of our most vulnerable citizens.

The first is an example of ‘Shared Lives', a service provided by individuals and families in local communities who offer accommodation and support in their family home to people who are unable to live independently.
The second is ‘Home Share', a simple way of helping people to help each other. The film shows two people with different sets of needs, both of whom also have something to offer each other.
Video case study about John, a 50 year-old man with Asperger's syndrome. He was being exploited by a group of young girls in the community. John has the capacity to make decisions for himself and clearly felt he was getting something from his relationship with one of the girls. He was also giving her money on a regular basis.
People who knew John were concerned for him. With support from his mother, his employer, his social worker and the police he was able to stop giving money to the girl. The girl was warned off by the police, but John really misses his relationship with her.
