This page contains the findings of systematic reviews undertaken by review groups linked to the EPPI-Centre. The findings are taken from a systematic review of research to assess what is known about the effectiveness of different strategies relevant to supporting children with EBD in mainstream primary classrooms. The aim is to facilitate teaching and learning for all pupils. The review is based on studies published up to 1999. A subsequent review searched the literature from 1999 to 2002, but found no conclusive results. This topic is included in the EPPI-Centre knowledge library.
Supporting children who are deemed to have 'emotional or behavioural difficulties' (EBD) or 'social, emotional and behavioural difficulties' (SEBD) within mainstream classrooms raises interesting issues for the intersection of behaviour management policies, inclusive schooling and the drive for raising academic standards. This review assesses the effectiveness of different strategies for supporting children with EBD in mainstream primary classrooms in ways that facilitate teaching and learning for all children. This systematic review was published by EPPI-Centre in 2003.
The aim of the review was to identify research which investigated the relationship between speech, language and communication difficulties (SLCD) and emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD) in children of primary school age (5–12 years) as both are common causes of concern for parents and teachers of young children. It was also to identify research which investigated whether intervening within one domain had the potential to influence outcomes in the other. This systematic review was published by EPPI-Centre in 2009.

This paper examines the links between early conduct problems and subsequent offending. It makes the case for greatly increased investment in evidence-based programmes to reduce the prevalence and severity of conduct problems in childhood.
This rapid review was undertaken to examine the effectiveness of behavioural interventions for sleep problems in young disabled children (up to age eight years), specifically interventions that can be carried out by parents in the home. Nineteen studies were identified, four were RCTs and 15 were before and after studies, most of which had less than 10 participants. Three of the four RCTs had been conducted in a UK setting.
This is a summary of a rapid review that was undertaken to examine the effectiveness of behavioural interventions for sleep problems in young disabled children (up to age eight years), specifically interventions that can be carried out by parents in the home.
Report of a study which looked at routes, destinations and outcomes for pupils permanently excluded from special schools and Pupil Referral Units. The study arose out of concerns over the quality of educational provision for young people with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties in England voiced by the Steer Report.
