Advocacy : in my view

This learning object is one of a set of exercises and activities taken from the book 'Modern Social Work Practice' written by Mark Doel and Steven Shardlow. This resource looks at advocacy and presents seven possible 'hidden agendas' at a hospital ward round. The student wants to advocate for the client to return to his home, but each hidden agenda might explain the other professionals’ involved in the ward round reluctance to accept the student's view. The activity helps students to practise whether and how they might open up the hidden agendas.

Care on a general hospital ward

The Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. They produce information and advice sheets to support those affected by dementia. People with dementia may be admitted to general hospital wards either as part of a planned procedure such as a cataract operation or following an accident such as a fall. Carers often worry about how their friend or relative will cope in such a strange environment. This advice sheet suggests ways that carers may be able to help.

Whole systems working: a guide and discussion paper

This resource was produced by the Integrated Care Network (ICN) which provides information and support to frontline NHS and Local Government organisations seeking to improve the quality of provision to users, patients and carers by integrating the planning and delivery of services.

Key to the role of the ICN is the facilitation of communication between frontline organisations and central government, so that policy and practice inform each other effectively. The ICN is part of the Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP).
