Information, advice and advocacy for older people: Defining and developing services

An exploration of information, advice and advocacy services for older people. Services providing information, advice and advocacy are crucially important in promoting older people’s independence. The report looks at information, advice, and advocacy and the ways in which they may overlap in practice, as well as the differences between them. It explores definitions, core principles, forms, roles and relationships. Information, advice and advocacy are also discussed in terms of skills, services and processes of empowerment.

The Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance (SIAA) promotes, supports and defends the principles and practice of independent advocacy across Scotland. This newsletter provides an update on the progress of the SIAA. Points of interest include information on the Human Rights Act 2000, Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003; details of organisations who offer support to those affected by stress, domestic abuse, mental health problems and elder abuse.

Supporting older families : making a real difference

This resource is a practical tool for learning disability partnership boards and others working to support older family carers and their relative with a learning disability – referred to here as older families – to bring about positive changes in their lives. It should enable boards to measure what they are doing, how well they are doing it and to decide what they need to do next.

This resource is the report of an event organised by the Advocacy Safeguards Agency in collaboration with the Scottish Council on Deafness, the British Deaf Association, the National Deaf Children’s Society, Deaf Children’s Society for East of Scotland and AdvoCard. Living on the edge: enabling older owner occupiers with moderate learning disabilities to live independently

Report focusing on the plight of older people with mild to moderate learning disabilities living independently in their own homes. It notes that many reach crisis points which threaten their independence and argues that a service response model based on crisis support workers is the most effective way of preventing such crises occurring and recurring.

Episode Two of the Scottish Recovery Network's Journeys of Recovery podcast features the stories 'There is more to me than my Mental Health', 'Paving my Own Way' and 'JR and Sue Ellen'. The narrative was derived from an interview conducted as part of the 'Recovering mental health in Scotland' (2007) for the Scottish Recovery Network. It was collaboratively written by interviewer and interviewee and is available in print form in the 'Journeys of recovery' booklet produced by the SRN .
