Parenting and children's resilience in disadvantaged communities

This resource suggests that there has been relatively little research about the distinctive challenges of bringing up children in disadvantaged areas, nor of children’s perspectives on identifying and managing threats. In particular, it highlights that little is known about how parents and children promote their children’s well-being and safeguard them from day-to-day risks.

Ending child poverty: 'Thinking 2020'

In June 2008, the Child Poverty Unit held an event entitled ’Ending Child Poverty: “Thinking 2020”’ at which around 100 stakeholders from across lobby organisations, academic institutions, devolved administrations and local and central Government attended. The event was designed to begin a discussion with stakeholders on the vision for a UK free of child poverty by 2020, and the route by which that could be achieved.

Deprivation and risk: the case for early intervention

This report is part of a series by Action for Children on the overriding importance of intervening as early as possible to support the most vulnerable children and their families. The deprivation these families experience is deeper and more complex than poverty alone, and the belief at the heart of this work is therefore that fiscal help alone will not stop their problems from being passed on through the generations.

Building character

Report of a research project which studied the development of character capabilities contributing to life chances and the factors influencing their development. It concludes that the early years are the critical years in this regard and that parents are, consequently, the principal character builders in society.

Ethnicity and child poverty (Research report no.576)

Report presenting and discussing the findings of a study which made use of a variety of approaches and sources to construct as detailed a picture as possible of how and why poverty varies across ethnic groups. In particular, it focuses on the extent to which it is possible to explain the poverty of ethnic minority children in terms of known risk factors such as lone parent families.

The poor relation?: grandparental care: where older people's poverty and child poverty meet

This report notes that there is an incomplete picture of family life in Britain. The scale of the contribution that the UK's 14 million grandparents are making is not fully known. This interim report uses new British Social Attitudes (BSA) survey data to begin to build a more comprehensive picture of Britain's grandparent population; looking at how it has changed over the last decade, and what financial implications becoming a grandparent might involve.
