How to use this learning object

This is the help page for this learning object. It sets out to give you some advice on the best way to approach your study of the object.

Overview

Children and young people communicate in ways which are different from or additional to those used by adults. Rather than being able to name and describe what they are thinking and feeling, children often convey their views, concerns and emotions through their play, art work, or behaviour. They may also struggle to understand complex information or explanations if these are only presented in verbal or written form. Consequently, social workers will often need to use play or art-based approaches if they are to communicate effectively with children and young people.

This e-learning resource begins by exploring some of the reasons why children and young people communicate in these additional and alternative ways. It then goes on to describe ways of using stories, art work, creative writing and music as forms of communication.

Practice examples are given to help you consider how to:

a) explain things in ways which make sense to children

b) enable children to express themselves in the best way for them

c) make sense of children's worlds and experiences without relying just on what children say...

Each approach has downloadable guidance to help you in planning your own work, including how to select the best approach for particular contexts, purposes and children.
