Intersecting childhood identities, inequalities and rights: unpacking concepts and exploring implications

The first in a series of four seminars. It introduced the concept of intersectionality and debates its meanings and purposes for understanding childhood identities and inequalities. It explored the different ways in which this framework can be put into practice by practitioners and policy makers. The seminar involved a combination of short presentations, group discussions and a plenary conversation and addressed the following questions:

Digital stories from the field

Digital storytelling programme of National Resource Center for Permanency and Family Connections in United States, to promote continuous improvement in the delivery of child welfare services. The stories include young adult, worker, parent and family perspectives.

Review of SCMA Community Childminding and Working for Families Services

Small scale, largely qualitative review of the community childminding schemes offered through the auspices of the Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) that was commissioned to consider the benefits of these services for children, families and society.

Community childminding in Dumfries and Galloway and in Aberdeen is briefly reviewed but, at the suggestion of SCMA, it also focused on community childminding in two particular cases – Scottish Borders Supported Childminding Scheme and Edinburgh Working for Families Scheme.

Report into an inquiry to examine the processes involved in deciding whether or not to remove a child from the family home and to consider whether these are consistent across the country.

Early Years Collaborative

The Early Years Collaborative was launched on 1 October 2012 at a multi-sector event hosted by Ministers, the Chief Medical Officer and COSLA as chairs of the Early Years Taskforce. Its objective is to accelerate the conversion of the high level principles set out in GIRFEC and the Early Years Framework into practical action.
