Introduction
Welcome to this learning object brought to you by the Social Care Institute for Excellence
This learning resource looks how we can communicate through action, across distances, in documentation and in various group situations.
To access the content, you can use the tabs at the top or use the next button at the bottom of the screen. It's probably best to use the next and back buttons on your first visit so you don't miss anything. You can always use the tabs at the end to go back and re-read the areas that interested you.
Before you begin you may want to read the useful information to the right. However you can always gain access to the help section and the learning aims throughout the learning object by using the links at the top of the screen.
When you are ready to start click the 'next' button.

Introduction
We begin by looking at the premise that "actions speak louder than words" and how offering practical support can communicate a great deal. We explore this idea through a case study before tackling several other areas of communication, both in-person and by other means.
Finally, we will give you some handy tips about keeping good records of all your communication, to ensure the best care of service users and carers.
This information is split into the following sections:
- Practical Support
- Communicating at a distance
- Record keeping systems
- Presentation skills
Before you start, have a think about how confident you are in each of these areas. Jot them down on a piece of paper, starting with the one you feel least confident about. The order you write down is the best way to approach the learning object: start with the areas you feel you are weaker on, then work down through to your stronger areas if there is time.
