How to use this learning object
This is the help page for this learning object. It sets out to give you some advice on the best way to approach your study of the object.
Overview
Effective communication skills are crucial in gathering the kinds of information from service users and carers necessary for assessment, planning, intervening and reviewing. Asking questions is not always the best way of finding out what is needed in sensitive and complex situations. Consequently professionals often need to use additional or alternative skills in order to get the fullest picture.
This e-learning resource will use a case-study to help you develop your observation, listening and interviewing skills and to become more aware of your own subjectivity. Different ways of asking questions will be considered in more depth and you will have the opportunity to try out some creative approaches to gathering information using diagrams or art-based tools.
These skills will help you to gather information in a range of situations and to interpret it more accurately and effectively.
You will also be able to read the views of people who use care services (including children) on their experience of being assessed.
