How to use this learning object

This is the help page for this learning object. It sets out to give you some advice on the best way to approach your study of the object.

Overview

Communication is a complex process. Even a routine initial interview requires diverse communication skills. Discovering the other person's perspective and establishing a shared agenda for the interview are priority tasks, but the social worker will also need to explain bureaucratic procedures and to provide as well as gather information. The social worker must also be ready to cope with the unexpected whilst remaining focused and empowering.

This e-learning resource contains a case study in which a social worker, Jane Standing, meets Mrs Kate Collier. As you accompany Jane, you will discover some of the challenges she faced and be able to decide how you might tackle them. By the end you should be aware that effective and empowering communication requires:

  • Planning and preparation
  • Sensitivity to the other person's expectations and concerns and willingness to establish and maintain a shared agenda
  • Understanding precisely what information the other person needs
  • A way of explaining this information that increases understanding.

When you have worked through the case study you will be able to download a checklist to help you as you prepare to meet a service user or carer.
