Evidence based practice learning object
Part of the SSSC Practice Learning Qualification suite of learning objects, this learning object is intended for those studying at Level 7 and Level 9 of the Practice Learning Award but may be of interest to those studying at levels 9 and 10 too. The object is also designed to be used by facilitators of learning together with their learners.
Section One ‘Types of Knowledge’ explores two kinds of evidence used in practice: the evidence provided by our own experience and the evidence provided by research.
Section Two ‘Attitudes to Research’ considers three statements about attitudes to research using audio clips of practitioners explaining their views.
Section Three ‘Quantitative Research Live!’ is a simulated example of research, introducing some basic statistical techniques. The intention is to show the essential simplicity of the research process and remove some of the mystique.
Section Four ‘Qualitative Research’ introduces qualitative research, illustrating the difference from quantitative research.
Section Five ‘Searching for Evidence’ includes tips on how to design a search strategy and how to narrow or expand a search as appropriate It includes an opportunity to search the NHS Scotland e-Library and compare the results of your search with ours.
