The effect of parental substance abuse on young people

An exploration of the experiences of young people (15-27 years) affected by parental drug and/or alcohol misuse. This report provides an in-depth account of the impact of parental substance misuse on parenting, on roles within the family, and on relationships. It identifies differences in the effects of drug and alcohol misuse and the relevance of gender and socio-economic status.

As well as focusing on the impact of parental substance misuse, the report studies what young people think helps or hinders them in their lives. It examines their hopes for the future, their practical efforts to live independently and the relationships and services that support them in this. This study found that all the young people, despite the variety of their experiences, found ways to deal with their difficulties, showing resilience and the ability to adapt.
