Comprehensive area assessment: framework document

CAA is the new framework for the independent assessment of local public services in England. This document sets out how it will be delivered from April 2009.

Part 1 gives an executive summary and framework overview.

Part 2 details the framework and what it will deliver and describes area assessment, organisational assessments, and how CAA will be carried out. Further sections cover improvement and inspection planning, reporting CAA, the evolution of assessment and reviewing and evaluating CAA.

Skills development and theorising practice in social work education

This report describes a project that sought to analyse and evaluate a particular academic course unit entitled 'Skills development and theorising practice', which ran in 2002-2003 as part of the old Diploma in Social Work. The aim was to gain a greater understanding of how student development could be facilitated in these key areas of practice.

National care standards for early education and childcare

Regulations covering services for children and young people up to the age of 16 years which are to be regulated under the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001.

Applicable to services in public, private and voluntary sectors, and in domestic or non-domestic premises which provide services for over two hours a day and for six days or more each year.

Guide to strategic commissioning: taking a closer look at strategic commissioning in social work services

Guide intended to assist councils, working with key strategic partners, to evaluate their performance on the strategic commissioning of care and wider supports for adults, children and young people.

It should also assist councils to evaluate joint commissioning with partner agencies. Its use is not mandatory.

The guide is designed for use in all sectors of social work. It is not prescriptive, and it is for councils to decide how to use the material. However, it contains key questions to ask when evaluating performance on strategic commissioning.

Joint publication: Dementia - Supporting people with dementia and their carers in health and social care

Social Care Institute of Excellence (SCIE) feature on dementia, exploring the effective implementation of the SCIE / NICE Dementia guidelines. SCIE’s film aims to highlight the importance of social and health care working together to help people with dementia better manage their condition.

Ensuring all disabled children and young people and their families receive services that are sufficiently differentiated to meet their needs: progress map summary

This progress map summary includes key research findings from a C4EO knowledge review about the diverse needs of different groups of disabled children and their families, and whether services are meeting these needs. The summary includes challenge questions which can be used as tools for strategic leaders in assessing, delivering and monitoring the ways in which the needs of disabled children from differentiated groups are met.

A competence framework for trusted assessors

Trusted assessors are support workers who have the skills to provide older and disabled people with equipment to help them to maintain their independence. This document aims to inform professional development and training activity relating to equipment provision. It is divided into four parts.

SCIE knowledge review 07: improving the use of research in social care practice

Evidence-based policy and practice increasingly demands the use of research as a key tool to improve practice. However, little research can be directly applied to practice, many practitioners aren't equipped to digest research and appropriate support systems are lacking. What is needed is a better understanding of the relationship between social care research and the work of social care practitioners, including what organisational structures are needed to enable the use of research.

SCIE Knowledge review 03: Types and quality of knowledge in social care

SCIE, in the formation of its good practice guidance for the social care sector seeks to include all relevant kinds of knowledge and strongly believes that it is only through looking at the sector from a whole perspective - including the views of service users and practitioners - that we can truly advise social care workers on what works best.
